Today I saw a patient whose brother I had seen in clinic yesterday. The mother was very excited to see that I was going to see her son yesterday that she asked whether she could switch all of her kids to see me specifically. The patient I saw today was in for Type I DM hyperglycemia in the PICU and as I went to discharge her, I decided to lay down a hammer of a motivational speech re: her reducing her carbohydrate intake by comparing effects of DM peripheral neuropathy to leprosy. I could see that I was not only captivating her, but also her two younger brothers (one of whom I had see yesterday) and her parents. Her mother kept looking back at the father in excitement (I could see out of the corner of my mind) like "see, I told you he's a good doctor" and even the father asked questions re: the PFT I had ordered on his son re: asthma. They all seemed really motivated to cut back on carbohydrates (they love potatoes) and both the mother and father declared that they want all their kids to see just me.
I am good at connecting, putting people at ease, laughing/joking/being laid back with patients, and explaining many medical concepts to them!
I have at least 4 individuals/families who have asked if I will stay in town after graduating because they want to continue to see me as my patients!
